ModStudent policies

Privacy Policy

Your grades, money, and plans are personal. Here’s what ModStudent collects, why, and how you stay in control of it.

The short version

  • We collect what you put into ModStudent so we can build your plan. That’s it.
  • We don’t sell your information, and we don’t share it for advertising.
  • Your data only goes to our AI provider when you choose to scan a syllabus or ask the course assistant a question. We never use it to train AI models.
  • You can download your data or delete your whole account yourself, any time, from Settings.

Who this policy covers

This Privacy Policy explains how ModStudent (“we,” “us,” and “our”) collects, uses, and protects personal information when you use our website and app.

ModStudent is a personal planning platform for college students aged 13 and older. It is operated by Betchine Fabienne E. Joseph, an independent sole proprietor based in Georgia, United States.

For privacy questions or requests, contact privacy@modstudent.com.

ModStudent is designed for students to use independently. We do not act on behalf of educational institutions when students independently add courses, grades, assignments, or other personal information to their accounts.

What we collect

What you give us

  • Account details: your email address and password. Your password goes straight to our sign-in provider and is never stored by us in plain text.
  • Profile: your name, preferred name, school, current term and its dates, time zone, and, if you add them, your date of birth, profile photo, academic level, main goal, minimum GPA, and aid deadline.
  • Your planner: courses, class schedules, assignments, personal tasks, grades, exams, study plans, attendance, and degree requirements. Personal tasks are not sent to AI.
  • Money: budgets, expenses, scholarships, scholarship applications, and financial aid items you track.
  • Scholarship matching answers, if you give them: degree level, year in school, school type, enrollment, field of study, whether you filed the FAFSA or receive a Pell Grant, and your interests. Every question is optional, and we never ask about race, ethnicity, religion, disability, or immigration status.
  • Resources and contacts: files you upload, notes and links you save in Resources, the folders you sort them into, and campus contacts you save, including instructor details from a syllabus you import. Uploaded files are not sent to AI.
  • Settings: reminder timing, quiet hours, display and accessibility choices, and your grading scale.
  • Messages to us: anything you send through the Help center, plus the page you sent it from.
  • Beta check-ins, if you answer them: your answers to a short survey after your first, fourth, and eighth week. We read them as totals or without your name, and keep them without the link to your account if you delete it.
  • Beta waitlist, if you join it: your email address and, if you choose to tell us, your school and whether your GPA affects your aid. We use it only to send your invite and beta updates, and delete entries that never become accounts after 12 months.
  • Invite code: if you sign up with one, we record which code you used, not the code itself.
  • Plus subscription, if you buy one: Lemon Squeezy, our payment provider, collects your name, email, billing address, and payment details at checkout under its own privacy policy (opens in a new tab). We never see or store your card number. We keep your plan, its status and renewal date, Lemon Squeezy’s customer and subscription numbers, and a log of billing events (the event type and what we did with it) so we can show your plan and fix billing problems.

What we record automatically

  • Product events: a short event name (for example, “onboarding completed” or “syllabus imported”) with small details such as counts. When something breaks, we record the page, an error code, and a short error message so we can fix it. These events are stored in our own database, not with an analytics company, and they never include your IP address or the contents of your syllabus.
  • AI usage counts: the time of each syllabus scan and course assistant question (not the question itself), so we can apply fair-use limits.
  • Active days: the dates (not times or pages) you opened ModStudent, so we can measure, in aggregate, whether students keep using it. Kept for 13 months.
  • Hosting logs: like nearly every website, our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs that include IP addresses and request details.

Cookies and your browser

We only use the cookies needed to keep you signed in. Your browser also remembers a couple of small things on your device, like which alerts you’ve already read. We don’t use third-party analytics, advertising networks, or tracking pixels.

How we use it

  • To run ModStudent: build your weekly plan, estimate grades and GPA, and show what needs attention.
  • To send account emails (like confirming your address or resetting your password) and, only if you turn them on, deadline reminder emails.
  • To read a syllabus when you ask us to scan one, and to answer questions you ask the course assistant.
  • To keep ModStudent safe and working: fair-use limits, spotting abuse, and fixing errors.
  • To understand, in aggregate, which features help students, and to answer your messages.

We don’t sell your personal information, we don’t share it for advertising, and we don’t use your content to train AI models.

AI Features & Syllabus Scanning

When you choose to scan a syllabus, the file or text you provide is sent to OpenAI to pull out dates, grade weights, and class times. If the AI reader is unavailable, a simpler reader runs on our own server instead. Either way, you review and confirm every date before anything is saved.

When you ask the course assistant a question, your question, the last few messages of that conversation, and a summary of the course data you chose (course names, instructors, grade weights, assignments, due dates, grades, exams, class times, saved campus contacts, and the text notes in that course’s Resources folder), plus your estimated GPA, your active scholarships with their amounts, GPA minimums, and renewal dates, your minimum GPA and aid deadline if you added them, open financial-aid items and scholarship applications, and study sessions planned for the next 14 days, are sent to OpenAI to write the answer. Budget details and personal tasks are not sent. We don’t save your questions or the answers, and they’re never used to train AI models.

Scanning doesn’t save the syllabus file to your account; only the details you confirm are saved. See Security and data for exactly what is sent and how OpenAI handles it.

Who we share it with

We use trusted service providers to run ModStudent. Except where noted for payments, they process personal information on our behalf only to provide their service. We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it with advertising networks.

Categories of recipients

  • Hosting and infrastructure: to serve the website and run server code (includes IP addresses in hosting logs).
  • Database, authentication, and file storage: to keep your account and everything you save in ModStudent.
  • Optional AI processing: when you choose to scan a syllabus or ask the course assistant, content needed for that request goes to our AI provider (see above). We never use your content to train AI models.
  • Email delivery: account emails and, if you turn them on, deadline reminders.
  • Error monitoring: crash and server-error reports so we can fix bugs. We disable default PII collection and scrub cookies, form contents, and IP fields we control before sending; see the provider’s policy for its infrastructure.
  • Payments (merchant of record): if you buy Plus, Lemon Squeezy handles checkout, tax, receipts, and refunds under its own privacy policy (opens in a new tab). As merchant of record it may act as an independent controller for some payment-related processing and as a processor for other services. ModStudent never sees your card number.

Provider names, what each does, and what data is involved: Third-party services.

Other sharing

  • Your messages to us: when you use the Help center forms, a copy may be emailed to our team (through our email provider) with your email address so we can reply.
  • Canvas, if you use it: when you import from Canvas, we contact your school’s Canvas site with the access token you paste, for that one request only. We never store the token.
  • Calendar links, if you use them: if you connect your school’s calendar feed link (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or another iCal link), we store that link in your account and read it from our servers to keep your deadlines updated. Disconnecting it deletes the link. If you turn on a calendar subscription, the calendar app you give the link to (for example, Google or Apple Calendar) fetches your deadlines and study blocks from us. We store only a scrambled (hashed) copy of that link, and you can reset or turn it off anytime.
  • When the law requires it: for example, a valid court order. We only share what is legally required.
  • If ModStudent changes hands: this policy would continue to protect the information you gave us, and we’d tell you before anything changed.

How long we keep it

  • While your account is open: we keep what you save so your planner works. You can edit or remove individual items any time.
  • When you delete your account: your uploaded files, every record you own, your scan counts, and your sign-in are removed right away.
  • Kept without your name: messages you sent us (up to 2 years), product events (up to 13 months), and the billing event log stay, but with no link to your account.
  • Payment records: deleting your account cancels any Plus subscription first. Lemon Squeezy keeps its own order and tax records as the law requires.
  • Backups: encrypted backups, kept up to 30 days, then deleted.
  • Hosting logs: removed automatically on our hosting provider’s own schedule.

More detail is on the Security and data page.

Your choices and rights

  • See and download your data: go to Settings → Your data and choose “Download full backup (JSON)” for your planner records or “Download calendar (.ics)” for your schedule. Your uploaded files can be opened from Resources.
  • Fix something: edit it directly in the app.
  • Delete everything: Settings → Your data → Delete account. You’ll type DELETE to confirm, and it can’t be undone.
  • Stop reminder emails: turn off “Email me upcoming deadlines” in Settings → Reminders.
  • Anything else: email privacy@modstudent.com for a copy of anything not in the download, or any other privacy request.

We respond to privacy requests within 30 days. Residents of some states (for example, California) and other countries have additional privacy rights. We honor these requests for everyone, wherever you live, and we’ll never treat you differently for making one.

How we protect it

Every student can only reach their own records, uploaded files stay private, and secret keys never leave our servers. Read the full details, and how to report a security issue, on our Security and data page.

Students under 13

ModStudent isn’t for anyone under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we’ll delete it. If you think that’s happened, email privacy@modstudent.com.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we’ll change the date at the bottom of this page. For important changes, we’ll let you know in the app or by email before they take effect.
